Personal Care and Hygiene

Personal Care Assistance: Home health aides assist with activities of daily living (ADLs), which are essential for maintaining personal hygiene and comfort. This includes:

  • Bathing: Assisting with or providing supervision during bathing to ensure safety and cleanliness. This may involve helping with getting in and out of the bath or shower and providing support to those who may have difficulty bathing independently.

  • Grooming: Helping with tasks such as brushing teeth, shaving, and hair care. Proper grooming is important for both physical health and self-esteem.

  • Dressing: Assisting individuals in choosing appropriate clothing and helping them dress. This may include managing clothing with buttons, zippers, or other fasteners, and adapting dressing techniques for those with limited mobility.

  • Toileting: Providing assistance with using the toilet, which may involve helping with transferring to and from the toilet, managing incontinence products, and ensuring cleanliness and comfort.

  • Mobility Assistance: Helping individuals move around their home safely. This includes aiding with walking, transferring from bed to chair, and using mobility aids like walkers or canes.

Hygiene and Incontinence Care: Aides manage hygiene needs related to incontinence and other personal care challenges:

  • Incontinence Care: Assisting with the management of incontinence, which includes changing adult diapers, managing bedpans or commodes, and ensuring proper hygiene to prevent skin irritation or infections.

  • Catheter Care: If needed, assisting with the management of urinary catheters, including cleaning around the catheter site and ensuring that the catheter is functioning properly. This helps prevent complications such as infections or blockages.
